New Technology to Aid Hip & Knee Surgeries

Similar developments were observed at the St. Michael Center for Joint Replacement who announced the addition of the second technology system MAKOplasty system which is to be used for hip replacements and total as well as partial knee replacements. The system is an interactive orthopaedic system that is powered by the RIO robotic arm which enables it to offer consistency and precision in knee and hip replacement surgeries.

Joseph Ramos, director of St. Michael Centre stated that with the help of this system, the MAKOplasty patients would witness rapid recovery and shorter hospital stays. The system would help achieve relatively smaller incisions than the conventional surgeries, he added.

The surgeons can now utilize presurgical plans offered by the MAKOplasty system with details regarding the bone preparation technique and customized impart positioning with the help of a CT scan of the patient’s hip or knee.

Carol Giese, director of surgical services-St. Michael said that MAKOplasty takes total knee replacement, partial knee resurfacing, and hip replacement to a new and advanced level of precision, with its innovative use of technology.

A virtual view of patient’s bone surface and 3-dimensional live-action is created by the system during the surgical procedure and the images are correlated to the presurgical plan. Moreover, with the help of the robotic arm, its visual and tactile feedback limits the bone preparation to specific diseased areas, which offers optimized implant placement positioning for every individual patient, stated the company officials.

Technology Helps Tackle Food Waste

Food waste concerns have been a global phenomenon with the rising cases across the globe. The need for a concrete system to tackle this scenario has been a crucial requirement.


With an aim to reduce the food waste, the Green Energy Fund provided a grant of $25,600 to the USF Food Recovery Project for the project that currently aims to develop four new pilot anaerobic bio-digesters sites around the campus which would be placed near the USF Facilities office, where the total cost of building the sites is $4000.

As stated by the principal investigator for USF Campus Food Waste Recovery Project, Whitney Fung, the project, during its initial year would work only for a limited number of locations that include USF Facilities and Champions Choice owing to the pilot project’s limited scope.

According to Whitney Fung, they are building new machines as there are no streamline procedures to get the student used to the existing machines on campus. They need to build new machines around the campus to recover food waste in larger masses as the existing machines are for a small-scale usage, Fung added.

By breaking down organic food matter, each of the new bio-digesters sites could produce environmentally friendly and clean methane biogas and fertilizer. The two outputs would then be used for fertilizing plants and potentially replace the natural gases and propane that contribute to carbon footprint of the campus and eventually harm the atmosphere.

The USF Food Recovery Project, therefore aims to create a closed loop food system by not just reducing the food waste but also utilizing organic food waste to generate renewable energy sources.

He said that our life style is also responsible for knee arthritis, under which knee joint is used more in sitting and sitting. He said that due to increasing use of junk food and fast food and due to the bad habits of food, body bones are not getting calcium and essential minerals, due to which the density of bones has started decreasing at an early age. Bones are becoming weaker and weak. The problem of arthritis and osteoarthritis is also increasing rapidly due to the wrong diet and lifestyle. Today, around 30 percent of patients suffering from knee arthritis in the country are 45 to 50 years old, while 18 to 20 percent of the patients are 35 to 45 years old.
