Driverless Taxis to Revolutionize Mobility in China

Baiyun Taxi that is operated by the Guangzhou Public Transport Group unveiled the driverless taxi service in the campus of the Guangzhou University. With the launch of three autonomous cabs China marked its entry into the fleet of self-driven taxis.

With an initial fare of 12 yuan being same as the price of regular cabs in the city, the new autonomous taxis are set to revolutionize the way people could travel in the city. Individuals could book the cabs with the help of the system developed by WeRide.ai, an autonomous driving company based in Guangzhou.

These autonomous vehicles are equipped with a facility that allows switching between self-driving and driving mode, which allows it to be driven even as an ordinary vehicle. By switching to the normal mode, the drivers can regain the control of the vehicle. In its self-driving mode, the driverless taxi comes equipped with four levels of autonomous driving where the vehicle is able to reduce its speed, park themselves in a safe space or pull over in the absence of control of the human drivers.

In their ‘Made in China 2025’ initiative, the Chinese government has included autonomous cars with an aim to transform China into a world-leading manufacturer of innovative, cutting-edge and revolutionary products, stated in the Bloomberg report. Furthermore, the collaboration witnessed amongst technology companies in China are being encouraged by the official policies.

These developments are further supported by the previous activities such as the witnessed by the country in May with the first driverless car sharing scheme launched by Baidu and the car-hailing platform Pandauto with an aim to deploy 100 electric vehicles by the end of the year.

Food waste concerns have been a global phenomenon with the rising cases across the globe. The need for a concrete system to tackle this scenario has been a crucial requirement.


With an aim to reduce the food waste, the Green Energy Fund provided a grant of $25,600 to the USF Food Recovery Project for the project that currently aims to develop four new pilot anaerobic bio-digesters sites around the campus which would be placed near the USF Facilities office, where the total cost of building the sites is $4000.

As stated by the principal investigator for USF Campus Food Waste Recovery Project, Whitney Fung, the project, during its initial year would work only for a limited number of locations that include USF Facilities and Champions Choice owing to the pilot project’s limited scope.

According to Whitney Fung, they are building new machines as there are no streamline procedures to get the student used to the existing machines on campus. They need to build new machines around the campus to recover food waste in larger masses as the existing machines are for a small-scale usage, Fung added.

By breaking down organic food matter, each of the new bio-digesters sites could produce environmentally friendly and clean methane biogas and fertilizer. The two outputs would then be used for fertilizing plants and potentially replace the natural gases and propane that contribute to carbon footprint of the campus and eventually harm the atmosphere.

The USF Food Recovery Project, therefore aims to create a closed loop food system by not just reducing the food waste but also utilizing organic food waste to generate renewable energy sources.
